CARGO/GREENPEACE
habanero's Chris Bruty collaborated with Cargo, Dave Gibbons (photography) and Greenpeace to create the designs for a fundraising night for the Greenpeace 'Save or Delete' campaign.
The Earth's ancient forests form some of the most diverse ecosystems known to science and are vital in regulating the world's climate. But eighty per cent of them have already been destroyed or degraded, and the remaining forests are under threat. Greenpeace is working to end illegal and destructive logging of the world's ancient forests, and to protect the rights of the indigenous peoples and species that depend on them.
A small part of this campaign was a club night at Cargo in East London, which involved DJs and live bands plus an exhibition of Banksy's work outside the club and in the adjoining streets. Banksy had been involved in this campaign from the outset where he designed - in his usual black humour - a poster with the lead characters from the Disney Jungle Book cartoon, bound, blind-folded and ready for beheading. In front of them, a hooded executioner at the ready - all to address the devastating nature of deforestation. Originally meant to be reprinted on posters, billboards, and postcards. Greenpeace abandoned this part of the project after Disney sent a "cease and decease" letter because of copyright infringement.
Instead, a stencil was designed for spray painting the 'save or delete' message wherever possible. It was this that we used for our artwork. Dave used the stencil to paint graffiti on (already felled) trees and stumps and then he photographed them. We then incorporated some of these images into our design for flyers, posters and advertising for the night. Greenpeace also gave us moving images and animations created by Hexstatic which we used to create club visuals that were shown at Cargo on the same night and....... Chris even got to play some records!
